Water, whitecaps and Breeze

Watercolor painting of a sailboat off the end of the wharf

I love the smell of the open water. Growing up on a farm in Idaho, I only had access to lakes and streams. It wasn’t until I was in high school that I actually got to see the beach and experience the power of the ocean and the tug and pull of tide on white sandy beaches.

Once I experienced it I was hooked. I spent some time in Hawaii between high school and college. Working in the Dole pineapple fields during the day and body surfing off of Lahaina in the afternoons. It was such a perfect world for me – working hard on the land where I had history and heritage, and immersing myself in the surging ocean and playing until I could hardly walk out of the surf at dusk.

We moved to Seattle 20 years ago, primarily because it allowed us to live close to water. I feel blessed every morning to wake up and to be able to see, smell and feel the sound as part of my ritual.

These are a loose compilation of sketches, paintings, and images based on my love of the ocean.
